Sauerkraut with smoked pork and mashed potatoes

Sauerkraut mit Kassler und Stampfkartoffeln

Hearty home cooking at its finest! Tender Kassler, tangy sauerkraut, and creamy mashed potatoes – this classic is not only easy to prepare but also a true taste experience. Perfect for anyone who loves hearty cuisine.

Ingredients:

  • 500 g sauerkraut
  • 400 g Kassler (pork)
  • 1 kg potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Nutmeg (optional)

Preparation:

  1. Prepare the potatoes: Peel the potatoes, cut them into pieces, and bring them to a boil in a pot of salted water. Boil the potatoes for aboutCook for 20 minutes until they are soft.
  2. Fry the Kassler: Heat some oil in a large pan and fry the Kassler on both sides until it has a golden color. Then remove from the pan, let it cool slightly, and cut into cubes.
  3. Prepare the sauerkraut: In the same pan, finely dice the onion and sauté until translucent. Then add the sauerkraut and briefly sauté. Add the Kassler back in and mix everything well. Season with salt and pepper and let simmer for about 10 minutes.
  4. Make mashed potatoes: When the potatoes are cooked, drain and return to the pot. Add the butter and mash the potatoes with a potato masher. Season with salt, pepper, and a little nutmeg to taste.
  5. Serving: Arrange the sauerkraut with Kassler on plates and serve the mashed potatoes alongside.
